Da mercoledì 23 a martedì 29 maggio 2012 si svolgerà il workshop Temporary School – A Collective Work, nel portico di Piazza Gramsci, Milano, in collaborazione con l’associazione Sintetico. Un laboratorio di educazione/formazione che prevede la centralità dell’artista nel processo di apprendimento/insegnamento inteso come spazio di libertà creativa.
Prendendo spunto dal concetto gramsciano dell’intellettuale organico crediamo che ognuno di noi sia in grado di interagire con il mondo in modo critico, di ri-immaginarlo sotto nuovi aspetti legati al proprio background e curiosità intellettuali. Ci proponiamo quindi di mettere a disposizione il contesto e l’input necessari affinché i partecipanti al progetto possano creare qualcosa di nuovo attraverso l’uso di materiali riciclati e di idee già radicate in modo significativo nel proprio vissuto. Allo stesso tempo ci ispiriamo a Edward Said e all’importanza dell’amateurism, un atteggiamento che risulta dall’entusiasmo spontaneo e privo di obiettivi di carattere professionale o di autorità superiori a cui dover fare riferimento.
Temporary School elimina la gerarchia tra studente e insegnante, tra artista e non-artista; non si basa sui canoni tradizionali dell’insegnamento ma offre invece un’opportunità di condivisione e di creazione.
Durante il workshop verranno immaginate e sviluppate nuove destinazioni d’uso del portico di Piazza Gramsci, area pedonale del quartiere Canonica-Sarpi. Il portico, attualmente utilizzato come parcheggio per motorini, è un ampio spazio costituito da un colonnato e coperto da un tetto trasparente che isola l’area dal rumore del quartiere rendendolo potenzialmente re-inventabile e prezioso per gli abitanti della zona. In occasione del laboratorio, sarà trasformato in un vero e proprio spazio educativo.
Alla conclusione del workshop, martedì 29 Maggio, celebrata da un momento conviviale aperto a tutti, verrà ufficialmente lanciato la seconda parte del progetto di riqualificazione urbana: il concorso NEXTFLOOR?_Open call dell’associazione Sintetico.
Sreshta Rit Premnath, (1979, Bangalore, India) vive e lavora a New York. La sua pratica artistica interseca diversi settori della cultura contemporanea – arte, educazione, formazione, editoria, critica militante -. E’ uno degli editor della rivista Shifter di New York. Tiene regolarmente dei corsi di alfabetizzazione creativa nelle zone rurali dell’India per conto dell’organizzazione internazionale KEEP, seguendo i principi metodologici di Augusto Boal e del suo Theater of the Oppressed. E’ uno dei fondatori del Project for an Archive of the Future Anterior insieme a Thom Donovan, ora ospitato dal CUE Art Foundation di New York. Ha vinto la borsa di studio della Art Matters Foundation con il progetto dal titolo “Who Builds Our Utopia?” che è stato realizzato a gennaio in India. Nel mese di settembre 2011 ha esposto in una personale alla galleria Nordenhake di Berlino.

Temporary School
Over a period of a week “Temporary School” at Piazza Antonio Gramsci in Milan aims to reflect on and create a space for artistic collaboration and education. Taking our cue from Antonio Gramsci’s concept of a “philosophy of praxis”, we believe that all individuals have the ability to critically engage with the world through their particular practice – be it art, architecture or anything else – and produce a positive social change.
By beginning with the particular social backgrounds and intellectual interests of each participant and physically transforming their “private archives” – those materials and objects that are relevant to their individual lives and social history – together we hope to create a new kind of social space within Piazza Gramsci. Our aim will therefore be to provide the environment and impetus necessary for participants in the Temporary School to create something new with materials and ideas that are already intimately meaningful in their lives.
We will also draw from Edward Said’s suggestion of the importance of “amateurism” – an activity that results from spontaneous enthusiasm without any professional goals, awards or higher authority to answer to. Temporary School does away with the hierarchy between “artist” and “non-artist” as well as teacher and student, and in its place creates an environment of sharing and creating rather than teaching. The artist Sreshta Rit Premnath and curator Maria Rosa Sossai both from ALAgroup will serve the role of instigators who guide and provoke the participants rather than teachers or judges.
By making the walls of the school that usually separate the private space of theoretical education and the public space of practical social activity as thin as possible we hope to bring these two intertwined aspects of our social existence and artistic practice closer together. With this aim in mind we will use the walls that contain the Temporary School to voice personal questions of the participants to the general public. We hope that in a simple way this will allow the theoretical debates within the school to resonate outwards and effect those who pass through the space.
May 23rd
– Show art work and educational work by Premnath; introduce Gramsci’s concept of the “philosophy of praxis” and Said’s notion of the “amateur” as liberating positions from which all people can see themselves as critically aware and be socially engaged within whatever field of activity they may be a part of.
BREAK, general public leave.
– Introduce project idea and ask students to collect discarded materials that are meaningful to them in some way and that they would like to transform into something new.
– Inaugurate the “wall of questions” with one question by each participant that reflects on something that is important to their lives written on the wall of the Temporary School.
May 24th
– Begin with a few exercises from Augusto Boal.
– Add questions to the “wall of voices” and begin discussion of how participants envision transforming their materials to “create an educational space”? How will this space respond to the important questions they have written on the blackboard.
– Begin work on project.
May 25th
– Begin with a few exercises from Augusto Boal.
– Add questions to the “wall of voices”.
– Work on project.
May 26th
– Begin with a few exercises from Augusto Boal.
– Add and remove questions from the “wall of voices”.
– Work on project.
– The group looks at each other’s work, makes comments and suggestions and thinks about final changes.

– Public presentation of work.
– The “Wall of voices” is taken down and individual questions are cut out and distributed to visitors.
