AN EDUCATION # 2, Angela Marzullo, Concettina

Concettina, the solo exhibition of the Swiss artist Angela Marzullo opens on April 27th 2013 at Villa e Collezione Panza, Varese. This is the second appointment of AN EDUCATION, a series of exhibitions of artists’ videos and workshops curated by ALAgroup and promoted by FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano.
On the day of the opening, from 10am to 1pm, Angela Marzullo will conduct a workshop with students from a local high school, while at 4pm she will meet the public during a conversation with the director of Villa Panza Anna Bernardini, the curator Maria Rosa Sossai and the film critic Mauro Gervasini. Afterwards the video will be screened in the chapel of the villa, specially set up as a project room. There will be guided tours for students of schools, colleges and universities of the surrounding area and of Lombardy.
For years now Angela Marzullo has been working on the ways in which knowledge is transmitted and is identified with the power of patriarchal culture. Her identity as an artist has merged with that of mother and her two daughters are often the protagonists of her videos.
Concettina, inspired by Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Lutheran Letters (1976), is a critique of contemporary pedagogy, a social and existential reflection on the role of education in today’s society.
For Pasolini school is a cultural organisation based on a hierarchical structure that miseducates, building and strengthening institutional power rather than promoting the educational and spiritual growth of its students.
The video was produced by the artist during her residency at Istituto Svizzero di Roma in 2010. Angela Marzullo selected a number of sentences from Pasolini’s book and asked her two daughters to interpret them. Concettina shows the uncertainties and doubts of two teenage girls who think out loud while roaming around the semi-desert car park of Villa Borghese in Rome, a significant place for hosting – in 1973 – Contemporanea, the historic exhibition of contemporary art that brought together the work of some of the most important artists in the world; it is also a tribute to the architecture of Luigi Moretti.
Artist’s biography
Angela Marzullo (Zurich, 1971) lives and works in Geneva. In 2010 she was artist in residence at Istituto Svizzero di Roma; during her stay she made Concettina, a short film based on Pasolini’s ‘Lutheran Letters’.

Her work was presented in a number of festivals such as: Arcipelago, 19° Festival Internazionale di Cortometraggi e Nuove Immagini, Rome, 2011; Eternal Tour, Khalil Sakakini Center, Ramallah Mapping, Geneva, 2010; ImpaKt, Sorbonne Paris 1, Paris, 2009. In 2009 she was awarded the ‘Bourse pour artiste de plus de 35 ans’ and the ‘Bourse d’aide à la création’ by the Department for Cultural Affairs of Geneva; between 2007 and 2010, she won the ‘Bourse pour un atelier d’artiste à l’Usine’ funded by the Contemporary Art Fund of Geneva.

Il 27 aprile 2013, nel Salone Impero di Villa e Collezione Panza, inaugura l’esposizione personale dell’artista svizzera Angela Marzullo dal titolo Concettina, secondo appuntamento di UN’EDUCAZIONE, un ciclo di mostre di video d’artista e laboratori a cura di ALAgroup e promosso dal FAI – Fondo Ambente Italiano.
Il giorno dell’inaugurazione, dalle ore 10 alle 13, l’artista terrà un laboratorio con un gruppo di studenti mentre alle ore 16 incontrerà il pubblico nel corso di una conversazione con la direttrice di Villa Panza Anna Bernardini, la curatrice Maria Rosa Sossai e il critico cinematografico Mauro Gervasini. Nei giorni successivi il video verrà proiettato nella cappella della villa appositamente allestita come project room; saranno inoltre organizzate visite guidate rivolte a studenti di scuole, accademie e università del territorio circostante e della Lombardia.
Angela Marzullo lavora da anni sui modi in cui il sapere si trasmette e si identifica con il potere della cultura patriarcale. La sua identità di artista si è sovrapposta a quella di madre e spesso le figlie sono le protagoniste delle sue opere. Il video Concettina, ispirato alle Lettere Luterane (1976) di Pier Paolo Pasolini, è una critica della pedagogia contemporanea, una riflessione sociale ed esistenziale sul ruolo dell’educazione nella società di oggi. Per Pasolini la scuola è una struttura organizzativo-culturale gerarchica che diseduca, che costruisce e consolida il potere istituzionale invece di promuovere la crescita culturale e umana degli studenti.
Concettina è stato realizzato da Angela Marzullo durante una residenza all’Istituto Svizzero di Roma nel 2010. L’artista ha selezionato alcune frasi significative del testo di Pasolini e ha chiesto alle due figlie di interpretarle. Il video racconta le incertezze e i dubbi che caratterizzano la vita di due ragazze adolescenti le quali riflettono a voce alta muovendosi all’interno del parcheggio semideserto di Villa Borghese a Roma. Si tratta di un luogo ricco di memorie per avere ospitato nel 1973 Contemporanea, la storica mostra d’arte contemporanea che ha raccolto i più importanti artisti del mondo, ed è anche un tributo all’architettura di Luigi Moretti.

Nel 2009 le vengono assegnate dal Dipartimento degli Affari Culturali di Ginevra la borsa per artisti sopra i 35 anni e la borsa di aiuto alla creazione, mentre tra il 2007 e il 2010 il Fondo d’Arte Contemporanea di Ginevra le assegna la borsa per un atelier d’artista presso il centro culturale autogestito l’Usine.
