A Certain Idea of Border

Italy | Switzerland

A project curated by ALAgroup in collaboration with the artists Ettore FaviniHektor Mamet, and the students of class IV/graphic design from the vocational school IAL, Cremona, and class II from the CSIA’s Art college, Lugano.

11th May 2013:

11 am: special event on the border between Italy and Switzerland | 3 pm: opening of the students’ exhibition at  Centro Culturale Chiasso, Sala Diego Chiesa, Via Soave, CH-6830 Chiasso, Cantone Ticino, Switzerland.

At the end of the eight-month long project A Certain Idea of Border, on May 11 2013 at 11 am, the students from the two schools will meet on a border trail (Chiasso-Pedrinate) between Italy and Switzerland and together they will build an ephemeral sculpture out of bricks. They will then read, in turn and in their mother tongues, a selection of their own statements and words on a possible temporary abolition of the border.

The opening of the exhibition is scheduled at 3 pm on the same day, with writings, music, drawings, photos and videos produced by the students during the workshop under the guidance of Ettore Favini and Hektor Mamet, and with the support of Edoardo Agustoni – art history lecturer at CSIA, Lugano.

The exhibition, set up by the students themselves, will take place at Centro Culturale Chiasso, Sala Diego Chiesa, and will be open to the public from 2 pm to 5 pm, until Sunday, May 12, 2013.

The students’ performance at the border will be documented by Ettore Favini and Hektor Mamet with a video that will premiere September 21, 2013 at  Villa e Collezione Panza, Varese, as part of An Education, a series of workshops and exhibitions curated by ALAgroup.

Project’s history: October 2012 | May 2013

This project was conceived as an eight-month long shared journey aimed at exploring the concepts of border and otherness in their multiple aspects – geographical, political, historical, cultural and existential – taking its cue from the experiences of two groups of teenagers; the narrative of these life experiences was key to the interaction and dialogue between peers who live in two neighbouring countries.

Between October 2012 and May 2013 the students exchanged opinions and reflections on the concept of border and its meaning. They then suggested its possible and temporary abolition in view of the performance taking place on the 11th of May. Based on the premise that the encounter with the other is also an encounter with the self, this experience fostered a process of awareness and harmonious growth, which also encompassed other aspects of their lives as teenagers.

The experience – equally shared by the students, the artists, the teachers and the curator of the workshop  – unfolded with a series of questions for the students, which, in turn, asked other questions to their peers and to the other participants. The interaction between the parties involved via the social networks –  Skype, facebook, twitter, etc. – became a subtext on how this kind of virtual communication can change the way we relate with each other.

“How can we define an idea of border? We did this by questioning ourselves and looking for answers. The border has thus become a place of experience and a link with the world, but also a portion of shared space of our collective imagination with its borders, vital centres, defences, and weaknesses.” (Maria Rosa Sossai)

Una certa idea di confine

Italia | Svizzera
